Display correct documentation version

I'd like to suggest the addition of a website feature to display the correct documentation version. If you stored the preferred version (e.g. 1.6) in a cookie, then when the user arrives via a link, you could display that version even if the referring link was for an older or newer version.

I frequently have to select the version after arriving at a linked page to the development version.

There could be a banner at the top with a message to say the version has been set to the preferred one, maybe with an option to view the linked one if required.

The banner at the top of the page could say "Your link referred to a different documentation version, this is your selected version, click here to see the version specified in the link, click there to change your preferences"

It would improve the user experience and reduce the server load by not serving each linked page twice, or misleading an inexperienced user to implement obsolete or future features.

Unless such a preference is entirely optional, I think that this would be very poor behaviour.

Even in that case, I am not convinced that it's really desirable, but I am interested to know how much of a problem this is for people.

While I can see that it could be useful, I think ultimately it would cause more confusion and that the effort to implement it wouldn't be worth it. Also consider that a section or page of documentation may not exist in your preferred version.
