Description (last modified by Richard Ebeling)

Using PostgreSQL, after upgrading from psycopg2 to psycopg3 (psycopg[binary]==3.1.14), iterating a distinct queryset of a model with an ordering that uses Value expressions causes psycopg.errors.InvalidColumnReference error saying that the ORDER BY expression must appear in the select list.

This is a minimal reproducible example:

### MODELS

from django.db import models

class TestModel(models.Model):
    test_field = models.CharField()

    class Meta:
        ordering = [NullIf("test_field", Value(""))]

### TEST

from name.models import TestModel
from django.test import TestCase

class TestTestModel(TestCase):
    def test_iterating(self):
        for el in TestModel.objects.all().distinct().iterator():
            pass

which gives this output when running:

$ ./manage.py test -k test_iterating
Found 1 test(s).
Creating test database for alias 'default'...
System check identified no issues (0 silenced).

Removing the .distinct() call prevents the error.

This is the relevant excerpt from the postgres log:

When using psycopg2, this is the resulting postgres log (without errors):
